Oppression and Confrontation

6:1 The Israelites did evil in the Lord’s sight, ¹  so the Lord turned them over to ²  Midian for seven years. 6:2 The Midianites ³  overwhelmed Israel. ⁴  Because of Midian the Israelites made shelters ⁵  for themselves in the hills, as well as caves and strongholds.

Gideon Summons an Army and Seeks Confirmation

6:33 All the Midianites, Amalekites, and the people from the east ⁶  assembled. They crossed the Jordan River ⁷  and camped in the Jezreel Valley.

[6:1]  ¹ tn Heb “in the eyes of.”

[6:1]  ² tn Heb “gave them into the hand of.”

[6:2]  ³ tn Heb “the hand of Midian.”

[6:2]  ⁴ tn Heb “The hand of Midian was strong against Israel.”
